PRESIDENT’S CORNER

Where has the summer gone? It’s almost the end of July and the Great Darke County Fair is just around the corner. Of course once the fair is over, Arcanum Schools will start and our first regular meeting of the 2010-2011 year will be here. More will follow on that meeting when we get closer to the 1st of September. In the interim, it seemed appropriate to update our membership on what has occurred this summer:

§ The shelter house project in Ivestor Park was completed in June under the great leadership of Lion Carl Weisenbarger, Lion John Hicks, and Lion Lonnie Norris with the able assistance of Connie Norris. Hey Lion Lonnie, we now know who the real worker is your family. Of course no project like this could be completed without the cooperation and involvement of our Lions’ members. I would list all those who assisted, but I’d leave someone’s name off the list so I’ll just say a "BIG THANK YOU" to each of you that was able to repair, scrape, or paint. The shelter house looks great. Can’t you hear the Lions roar?

§ Since the Arcanum Pool opening was delayed, our club did not have to set up tents for the swim team’s annual invitational, but many thanks to Lion Pastor Paul for his willingness to lead this endeavor.

§ Our Float Committee has been really active this summer under the leadership of Lion John and his trusty band of Lion helpers. To date, our float has been to: Arcanum Old Fashioned Days Received a trophy presented by village council in memory of Jim Rench; Troy Strawberry Festival; Versailles Poultry Days received a 1st Place award; Ft. Recovery Festival; Dayton Air Show Parade; and Celina Lake Festival Received 1st Place Plaque for Queens Judging. Yet to come are participation in the Bellbrook Festival and Minister Oktober Fest with the possibility of also going to New Bremen as well. WAY TO GO!

§ I just sent out a bulletin reminding all members that our annual meeting to sign up to work the Darke County Fair, Gate 2. We will need everyone’s help who is able. The meeting is Thursday, August 5, at 7:00 pm. at Faith Church. Our only business is to sign up for the gate. There is no meal. Lion Dick and Lion Lonnie will be attending a meeting this Thursday, July 29 at the fairgrounds for all groups working the gates. Thanks to both of them for attending since I cannot. Sounds as if the wheelchair building may be moving which will undoubtedly have some ramifications for our club, but Lion Dick and Lion Lonnie will know more after the meeting Thursday night.

As the beginning of a new year approaches, I hope your summer has been restful and refreshing. May we all enter this year with anticipation for all the ways our club will be able to be involved in our community. In order to live out our motto of "We Serve", it will take each of our members working together. We may not always agree on every project or decision that is made, but let us support one another and our club. Together we can accomplish much. Looking forward to seeing all of you who can make it on August 5.

Respectfully submitted,

Lion Don
